QUOTATIONS.
QUOTATIONS.
THURSDAY 29TH NOVEMBER
Our second project in the Graphic Design pathway is "Quotations". On the left i have taken screenshots of the brief to remind me what we have to complete and to also make sure I'm ticking all the relevant research off.

We have to choose a quote, after doing research into the author of the quote, why it was written and the timeframe it was written in we are then tasked to create an A to Z typeface too illustrate our quotes. After we do that we need to create three experimental typefaces to show our quote.
Then we take a word and produce an A3 quote in our chosen type.
MONDAY 3RD DECEMBER
After looking at the at the brief and the project launch i then started to research different quotes that i liked. What I did find is that you need to be specific on what you Google otherwise you get lots of very cringe quotes.

"A LOT OF PEOPLE NEVER USE THEIR INITIATIVE BECAUSE NO ONE TOLD THEM TO." - BANKSY

"GET BUSY LIVING, OR GET BUSY DYING" - STEPHEN KING
These are some of the quotes that i found. I really like the quotes from Banksy as they are quite cynical but yet funny. I did however look at a range of different quotes from different people to find the one i liked the most.
"I DON'T BELIEVE IN ANYTHING. I'M JUST HERE FOR THE VIOLENCE." - BANKSY
"THE UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING" - SOCRATES
BANKSY.
BANKSY.

After looking at a range of different quotes all by different people i decided to go with a quote by Banksy. I really like the way he uses text in his work to make his images more powerful. I started by looking at his website and the work that he does

"THE JOY OF NOT BEING SOLD ANYTHING." - BANKSY
If this piece was not on Banksy' website you could still tell it was them as of the strong political message. The fact that he has written this on an unused billboard speaks volumes.
"THIS LOOKS A BIT LIKE AN ELEPHANT." - BANKSY
For Banksy this piece is quite abstract, he is drawing similarities between objects in the landscape and animals. He is doing this because people don't really notice this in the landscape and compare it to other things. This shows

"WHAT WE DO IN LIFE ECHOES IN ETERNITY" - BANKSY
I really like this quote from Banksy, the juxtaposition between the quote and the bleak wall with the man washing it off really speaks volumes. The fact that they type is red and in a decorative/ cursive font makes it stand out to the viewer and makes it somewhat important.

TUESDAY 4TH DECEMBER

Today we had workshops, in the morning we did Illustrator where we looked at constructing our own letters. In the afternoon we had a letterpress workshop whereby we set a line of type and created relief prints. both of these i enjoyed, however i really liked the letterpress as it was something very specialised that i hadn't done before that i found effective.

WEDNESDAY 5TH DECEMBER
Today was an inderpendant study day. I spent my time today getting ready for next year. By this i mean making sure my UCAS is done, I was able to finish off my personal statment and now all need to send it off.

THURSDAY 6TH DECEMBER
RESEARCH
I started off my research by looking at what peoples opinions are of graffiti and street art are. I did this through a poll on my Instargram. I thought this was going to be better as it would appeal to more people than an email to all of the foundation as not many people normally respond to them.
RESEARCH
i found that the majority of people have a positive outlook on street art and graffiti, however some people still don't like it

FRIDAY 7TH DECEMBER
I spent my second independent study day of this week at a open day for a BA course in Graphic Communication Design. This was held at Central St Martins. This is my first choice of uni's for next year.

MONDAY 10TH DECEMBER
I started project by looking into a bace font. i chose Futura for this because i thought it would be the best for making stencils, this is because it is bold. After choosing this i then was faced with the problem of making stencils from each letter. This is something i need to look into to more as i have not made stencils before and don't know what to make them out of.

Images from my camera for a shoot done looking first hand at graffiti in Bournemouth town.

After looking at typefaces, i thought it would be a good idea to go out and do a shoot looking at Graffiti in Bournemouth. This was to get a better understanding of the different styles of street artists. i felt this was good as it gave me an in site of the different letter-shapes and how they effect one another.

After looking at Futura as a typeface and looking into graffiti around where I live, I then played around with the idea of stencils. This was a learning curve as I've never made stencils. these took some time to do because i was trying to figure out where to cut to make sure I would be able to keep the anatomy of the type normal.
STENCILS
STENCILS

This is one of the stencils i made. These were made from paper as it was the easiest and quickest was in which i could made my letter shapes without spending lots of money. i was surprised at how these turned out, as they all looked how i wanted them too.
INTENSION
INTENSION
after looking at all the research and trials that I have done, I feel as though my work is collaborating both traditional typefaces and graffiti together. I want to do this because i feel as though it's an innovative idea.

This is my complete alphabet,I had to use photoshop too crop and rotate with the brush tool too edit out the spots that weren't white.

After spray painting all my stencils into letters, i then scanned them in and cropped them so they looked clean without the boarder that they previously had.

GIF
GIF

During the quotations project I took a trip to the Tate Modern, where by this exhibition was on. This really stood out too me, probably because of the bright lights however i thought i could take this as loose inspiration and make a video for my project. This will be good to explore because it's something that I've never done before.

With creating this video i used lots of different software to create this GIF, I had to start by creating a file with my whole quote in order to use after effects in the way I wanted. After I exported the file and used Premier Pro to make sure it to make it into a repeated GIF.

I created this for Instagram, this is the reason why it is square.

POSTERS
POSTERS
These three are my final posters for my quotations project. They include an alphabet that i have made, my quote and some context. This was important with my work because i wanted to make sure that my work had meaning.

My final alphabet incorporates both traditional typography and new era style with the inclusion of different graffiti techniques. This overall was successful because i have accomplished what i set out to do.
With my quote I used a photo that would reflect the they typeface itself, I did this because i wanted the background to reflect my typeface itself.
I also wanted to make sure my typeface/ quote had some context. I chose to look at the movement in London battling knife crime. This where lots of youths are taking to the streets on bikes to protest people being killed by knives. This movement is called Knives Down Bikes Up and reflects we should be tackling crime by bringing people together with bikes. My typeface links too this because of the
